### Why Promotion In-App Purchase instead of Ads

In-app purchases constitute one of the most widely used app monetization models. According to new statistics, an estimated 50% of non-game and 79% of game apps use IAPs to generate revenue. Indeed, there must be something about them if such an overwhelming majority of the apps currently available via Google's Play Store and Apple's App Store are free to download (in 2021, it was 96.7% on the former and around 93% on the latter). If freemium is the way to go, what is the best way to make the most out of your app? 

In this article, you'll find out how best to promote your in-app purchase to maximize the number of successful user purchases—and we'll tell you why we believe in-app purchases are the way to go.


### Types of In-App Purchase Promotion 

One way to approach promoting items or upgrades to enhance the experience of your app is based on the user's journey, or what's often called the user funnel. It's the trajectory from the user's first interaction with the app to first proper use, and eventually—if the user enjoys the mobile product—to repeated, regular engagement with it. Ultimately, it's up to your users to decide whether they like using an app, just as it is up to them to discontinue using it and delete it from their devices. The more users progress from one point to the next down the funnel, the greater your conversion rates. 

If you rely on the **funnel-based type of In-App purchase promotion**, you assume the user will understand the value of the purchases you offer based on their previous experience of using the app. In other words, you trust that most of your users will figure out what it is they will get out of the transaction without actually having tested the offering. 

The funnel is created by all the users that are using the app. Some of them are using more than others in different ways. Might use the app's basic features that are provided for free, and after a while, they might decide to go for the premium model to unlock extra features or avoid ads.

At the base of funnel optimization, the developer decides what the funnel is, and according to the selected funnel, the data structure is built. This means that the KPI and analytics are designed in order to measure the success of the funnel. For example, if the monetization on the app is around subscription, then the main KPI is the subscription payment, and those users' data will be used to design the funnel. So if 85% of the paying users have 12-day retention and they spend 20 minutes per day on the app, this will become the main KPI to track prior to the payment. The funnel will be built in 4 stages :
 1. Install and initial usage 
 2. Reaching 20 minutes of Session time
 3. optimize toward 12 days retention
 4. Subscription payment

By definition, if you aim to measure one type of funnel, you eventually can improve it or decide it is the wrong course of action and build a new one. As this is the only path you optimized for, there are many assumptions that are taken for granted, and not all are measured or optimized. 

What if the user gets confused by the offering, in any case? What if they don't enjoy their journey? Well, first of all, if this is the case, the user is unlikely to agree to purchase anything. And secondly, you'll need to improve the user funnel, which requires a great deal of development within the app. In this model, only a tiny fraction of users will interact with the offers of purchase or be convinced the purchased content is worth a try. 

Statistics consistently show that mobile shopping carts get abandoned at exorbitant rates—it can be as high as 80%, or even higher, depending on the region, service, and type of mobile product. This tells you that even when app users get interested in the potential in-app purchase, most will hesitate and discontinue the transaction. That's why it's essential to invest and build a clear strategy for IAP promotion that keeps users excited and strong-minded about finalizing the purchase.

**Active in-app purchase promotion** is the kind of promotion that does not keep users in the dark about the actual value of their purchases. Instead, it reveals what they are investing in within the app to the user. For example, This can be done, by offering a free trial for a limited time, which gives the user a glimpse into what is available in their app journey following a purchase. Videos and interactive content can also be used. Active IAP promotion offers users a sense of control over how they invest in your app. But the benefits don't stop at greater engagement and spending on the user's part.

Once you allow the user to interact with the purchased content, you get actionable data about the value of the purchase and the impact of your promotions. Depending on users' reactions to the proposed acquisition and their interactions with the premium content, you may find out which kinds of promotion work and which ones need improvement. That's because you will be able to determine whether the users understood the value of the product or upgrade on offer, and you'll see whether they started the purchase process. 

You can also test different content for purchase and count the interactions with each option, which will lead you to make better decisions regarding the development of your app and your promotional strategies. And finally, you will know the right times and places to situate your point of sale for in-app purchases.  


What about Ads?

You may be asking, why not just scale in-app advertising? Isn't that easier money? I need to add more reward Ads and lock the users. It may appear so. The critical thing to understand is that the revenue generated by ads is based on user action. The more activity there is the more money lands in your pocket. 

But this simplicity comes at a cost. The value of eCPM (effective cost per thousand impressions) is not exactly something that lies within your purview – at the end of the day, you can't gauge the price of your users' attention. You don't know what kinds of ads your app is displaying either. With the widely applied header bidding process—with your advertising space being automatically auctioned off to the highest bidder—you have very little say about the content of the ads you display. To make matters worse, user interaction with the ads is hidden. Due to privacy restrictions, ad networks have access to fewer data, making it hard to optimize their ads.

### So, What's It Going to Be? Revenue from Ads or In-App Purchase Promotion?



Let's make a simple comparison: pure numbers and a little speculation. Let's imagine a group of your second-day retention users. Let's assume we're looking at 1,000 users, and let's also take 10 out of the 1,000 to make an in-app purchase. The same 1,000 users generate five ad views per session on the app. Assuming that those 1,000 users participate in two sessions per day, this gives us 10,000 ad impressions within a day. If your average ads eCPM for 10,000 impressions for this group is 3 US dollars, you've earned yourself $30 (that's 10,000 divided by 1000 and multiplied by 3). 

Moving on to the purchase, let's imagine a simple, unthreatening in-app purchase for $2.99. If the 10 of 1000 users we've mentioned do make a purchase, you'll get the same money you've earned in your ads revenue. But since your ads money is generated per install, you need to trigger 30 installs on average to make every 3 dollars. However, if you use in-app promotion informedly, with an appropriate strategy, you may assume that around 50% of your installs will translate into an in-app purchase. So, with 30 installs, you get 15 purchases for $44.85. Rounding it up slightly, you get a 150% higher payout without relying on colossal user acquisition, and all of this without the complicated process of Ads integration. The actual value of IAP promotion has become a bit clearer now, hasn't it?

Ah, if only gym owners could wield a set of tools that the app world has in mobile LiveOps!

As a gym manager wishing to maximize profit, you could monitor which equipment is most popular, and which machines are faulty or too complicated to operate. You may offer discounts on membership, new classes, or bundles to convince your customers to invite friends. Building your app’s success starts with user acquisition, but it certainly does not end there. You need to build an economy oriented toward growth. This means your primary concern will be keeping users engaged—and happy—while increasing your revenue. No matter what extras you offer, the way they are offered will make or break the deal. 

Promoting in-app purchases (IAP) is a nuanced job: it allows you to profit from sustained user engagement, but it can also drive users away. Here’s what you need to know about in-app purchase promotion to do it just right:

##### Types of In-App Purchases
 
The main rule of promoting any product or service in any app is clarity. The user needs to understand what they are paying for and how the payment will be incurred. This means that promotions of in-app purchases should not just be tailored to the user’s needs, but also calibrated to the type of purchase. 

#### The three types of in-app purchases are:
**Consumable.**. This means buying items or services to be consumed while using the app, such as coins, a one-time streaming, or limited-time content. 
**Non-consumable.** Purchases that give the user indefinite access to a feature or item. It can be a new character skin, a removal of ads, or the use of special content.
**Subscription.** A regular payment that gives users access to special content, grants them a steady boost, or results in discounts on other payments.  

**Subscriptions typically indicate the most sustained engagement on the user’s part. With the right promotion, these will not only be renewed but also upgraded.** But if the offering isn’t priced well, or fails to deliver on the developer’s promise, the user can cancel their subscription.

App Store provides a server-to-server notification service which informs publishers about subscription purchases, renewals and cancellations in real-time, allowing them to update their user-account databases, and—with the right analytics—to understand what drives subscribers.

#### A Relationship Built upon Trust

As noted, clarity is key. And so is trust. If the user has found running the app to be clear and understandable, they are more likely to purchase whatever is on offer to further enhance their experience. When the app is performing well, the user can also trust that the in-app purchase being promoted is worth its price. After all, IAP promotions are typically managed by the app developer responsible for the app itself. 

Likewise, positive experience with previous in-app purchases is going to motivate further investments. That said, not every user will respond to the same promotion, and not every moment is right to push a new feature, special bundle or upgrade. That’s why in-app purchase promotion requires research, analytics, and strategizing.

#### Adjust the Scale

Choosing from the myriad of different promotion options is not easy, not least because that decision can have huge consequences. As a developer, you need to strike the balance between user engagement—how to capture and maintain attention—and user annoyance and frustration. 

If the new feature or item you are promoting is cool but not quite ground-breaking, perhaps it’s best not to bombard the user with full-screen interstitials and ever-recurring offers. Instead, you could benefit from adjusting the timing of your smaller-scale promotion to the user’s behavior pattern on the app. If they tend to check their messages when notified, perhaps a direct message will suit them better than aggressive pop-ups interrupting their regular mode of engagement with the app. Bear in mind that there are different kinds of pop-ups—offering a discount, or a product, for instance—and that they can appear at different times: when the user opens the app, or goes to the app’s store, or at checkout. These can be adjusted to target different types of users.

Save your special, immersive promotions for more substantial upgrades or special content. The scale and frequency of promotions should correspond to the offering’s substance and value. Planning ahead and devising a long-term promotional strategy will help you delineate the difference between one-off deals and larger, more complex campaigns. Thinking on a larger scale should also help you notify users about your offers in a consistent manner, in line with the overall economy of the app and its established style of communication.

#### Don’t Scare Them off

Shock-inducing methods of promotion tend not to be the wisest of choices. IAP promotions shouldn’t look out of place in the app because—to return to the issue of trust once again— they may be viewed as unreliable or deceitful. Instead, they should stick to the verbal and visual language of the app. They should be conversational, and they should be actionable. In other words, while natural and casual in their tone, your IAP promotions should guide users straight to the sales funnel. So, always make sure the **bold text**
For developers in charge of publishing promoted in-app purchases, the worst-case scenario happens when the promotion deters users from the app altogether. This can happen when users feel deceived, but also—crucially—when they get annoyed. 

Not only should promotions be woven into the overall experience of the app in an unintrusive way: the user must be able to dismiss the pop-up or promotional video that they find irrelevant or unappealing. And if they keep dismissing the promotion, that’s a signal for you to adopt a different approach.

#### Know Your User

Though limited, there are ways you can strategize your promotions without necessarily analyzing your customer database. One thing you can count on, as we all do, is the passage of time. Holidays and special events are times when most developers record greater numbers of promoted purchases. 

But you can’t just count on holiday seasons to boost your revenues. As with any promotional action, plan ahead! Make sure that a campaign promoting your special event does not coincide with, say, your Halloween promo. Most importantly, though, you do have to get to know your user. By using first-party data, analyzing users’ previous choices, and keeping track of their engagement with the app, you will find out which promotions should do the trick, and when to deploy them. Keep an eye on the time users spend contemplating your promoted content and count impressions to gain yet more confidence in making appropriate choices. Sorry to break this to you, but it’s not always love at first sight. Sometimes, it’s best to test a variety of options and approaches before pinpointing the most efficient strategy. Each item or upgrade can be presented to users from multiple angles. Perhaps a simple banner inserted in just the right moment will suffice to convince your user that the item on offer would really make their experience more gratifying. Or maybe, the user will respond to a more immersive promotion at the end of their session. But measuring the monetization based on IAP is a long process that requires a lot of A/B testing and iteration to find the right content and user experience.
The IAP optimization process can be looked at as funnel optimization. Each stage depends on the previous step. This funnel data is used to decide on the purchase type, pricing, bundling more resources to the purchase, and when to offer the in-app purchase to the user.

99% of IAP promotion content is based on static images. It can be popup ads or banners in the shop section of the app. the rest of the promotion is done by menu icons ensuring the availability of the store on each screen.

### **Make sure the benefits are clear and understand the value for each type of user in your app.**

Understand the different values of the purchased item with those questions :

1. **What is the type of purchase?** consumable / non-consumable / subscription. make sure the purchase is in the right category.  

2. **Is the purchase meant to be repeatable?** What is the trigger for the initial investment and for the next one? Does it depend on the user app usage or on the app content release?

3. **What can users do with the purchase?** What experiences can they have with this purchase?

Write down the groups of users that will enjoy this value and understand the message

Build content that promotes both possibilities and matches it to the users based on their previous usage of this consumable resource.

So how can you leverage this precious session time to grow and unlock engagement growth power to scale your in-app purchase?


**Scaling your ARPU**

Four main methods can create app revenue: In-App Purchase, Multi-Channel Platform ( Pay on a website and use the App - such as Netflix, Spotify ), 3rd Party Ads (AdNetowrks), and Selling Ads ( Facebook, TikTok). We want to distinguish between running ads and selling as those are two different models. For now, we will focus on in-app Purchases and running ads.
To scale IAP, let's talk about engagement. It is a vast topic that covers any interaction time spent using or playing your App, so we would like to focus on engagement with your in-app-purchase content as a subset of the user experience.
What is in-app purchase content? We will consider it any content shared with the user before the purchase. The content can be a part of the App or promotional content like an Ad or a text explaining what this purchase enables.

The engagement growth goal is maximizing the interaction time between the users and content that promote the IAP by measuring the interaction, quantifying the value of each exchange, and improving the next one.
We focus on IAP as the developer controls the whole process with full access to all the data. The right IAP promotion strategy will ensure incremental improvements over time with this visibility.

We will measure engagement growth through time spent interacting with advertisements. We can increase this time by adding more ads placements or creating a core loop that forces more ads on the user. Although we can control the base factor of the interaction time, much of the data beyond this point is outreach.
The Ads revenue is based on the advertiser's decisions and our user actions, and we can't improve it except by increasing the time that we sell. As we discussed in the previous blog on ads-mediation.
For In-App purchases, we would stay on the same playing field as ads and start by measuring interaction time with the Purchase offer. it can occur in the app shop or after failing a level and receiving an offer to continue playing. For this content to be valuable, we need to make sure that the user understands the value of the purchase. Therefore, the offer is relevant to the user, and the way to complete the transaction is transparent.
However, scaling is not as straightforward as ads with the current methods. When does the user interact with IAP content?
Usually, IAP promotions are based on a display banner with 5-10 words of text within a popup or inside the shop section of the app promoting a sale. 
The banner promotion unit is a short content format, delivering a small amount of data to the user with no room to create an emotional connection with the promotion itself.This type of promotion can work great for teams in full control of their data and the user journey. The banner is the tip of a "data iceberg" timed perfectly with an appealing value to the user. 
Ads provide long-format content that better delivers their message by using video and playable ads. Optimizing the creatives is the most effective way to improve engagement as data has been more restricted.

Our suggestion for developers that don't have the data infrastructure and team members to act on this data is to promote IAP with longer formats content. Create an even playing field between ads and your promotion by working with the same content formats. New formats unlock new placements outside the shop and popup, offering new content from the app creator for engaging the user.

Ads are an obvious way of boosting your app’s revenue. But maximizing your profit from in-app advertising is a complex task. That’s precisely where ads mediation comes in handy. There are, however, different methods of mediation, each with its pros and cons.

**In this article, we will look at the benefits of using a mediation layer for ads management, and guide you through the available options, so you can make informed decisions.**

##### What the whole fuss is about?

Managing ads is making sure everything ‘clicks’ in your app. This means integrating an SDK from the ad network that supplies the ad, using either integrated development environment (IDE) software or native code. 

**Your app will first need to be approved by the ad network for the SDK to be activated. The SDK will then collect user data, monitoring their location and their activity within the app, and communicating with the ad network.** In addition, the SDK will run testing on the app, scanning for fraudulent activity. As ad networks grow, they become more and more vulnerable to low-quality and non-human traffic, which makes SDK testing and the transparency it ensures the most reliable system.

The ad network will evaluate your app’s traffic value and assign best suited campaigns accordingly. At the same time, advertisers within the ad network measure their performance with each app, and can both request more of your traffic and refuse (block) it, if it doesn’t measure up to their KPI. Finally, the app owner can set their minimum price at which their traffic can sell, meaning that not every advertiser’s bid will be approved. 

**All of this amounts to a highly complex supply-demand dance**—or more like the tango scene from The Scent of a Woman, as Al Pacino’s character in the movie is blind, just like the app owner. Traffic scores don’t need to be revealed, and the app owner can’t see their score with each advertiser. 

A way out of this pickle is eCPI, or effective cost per install, which is offered by most ad networks. In this model, the app owner will receive higher payments for traffic when the advertised product or service is installed. Thus, it allows both media sellers and buyers to reap profits once they reach an established KPI. 

That said, the app owner may not be satisfied by the eCPI value which is set by the ad network based on that network’s algorithm. This means that the publisher will look for other ad networks which might offer a higher eCPI. And here’s where things get tricky…

##### What ads mediation solves

**Every ad network you work with comes with the network-specific SDK, which has to be integrated into your app. Each SDK will make calls to its ad network’s ad server. **Having multiple ad network SDKs helps you maximize your fill rate, ensuring you that no impressions are left unsold. But it also consumes your management capacity, as you have to log into each network’s reporting systems to collect data on your revenue. While this data is extremely useful and keeps you informed about your user groups, their geographies, app behavior and more, extracting and monitoring it across different ad networks is complicated, hard work. Ads Mediation does that work for you. 

As the name suggests, ads mediation serves as an intermediary between your app and all the AdNetworks SDKs it’s using. Put differently, it’s a set of tools that link your app with multiple ad networks, helping you maximize revenue from ad display. So, you may want to ask, how does it work?

##### Waterfalls and daisy chains

In the system that dominated programmatic media sales until recently, available impressions are offered to a list of ad networks one after another. The order in which ad networks are approached is determined by the app owner and the ranking parameters they set. Typically, publishers look at the average historic yield that the network has produced for them: the first ad network to respond to the inventory on offer with a satisfactory bid wins. **When there is no bid, or it does not meet the minimum established by the publisher, the inventory is passed down the list of ad networks in a process known as waterfalling or daisy-chaining.**

The waterfall approach to ad suppliers is straightforward and gives publishers a considerable degree of control over their advertising sources. It isn’t perfect, however. The average historic yield need not equal the highest bid. The potential highest bidder might be too low in the daisy chain to get a chance to bid. This means the publisher is losing money.

In order to level the playing field and enable app owners to get the most out of their impressions, a different auctioning model has been implemented. **Header bidding is increasingly the go-to procedure of ads mediation.** Rather than contacting ad networks one by one, the mediation layer auctions off the available inventory to the highest bidder.
